Casey's 2011-12 Advocacy Program

Casey's 2011-12 Advocacy Program

One of the most fundamental roles of all councils is to advocate on behalf of their communities for the improvements, services and funds they need, where these are the responsibility of the state and federal governments or other third parties.

In 2011-12, the City of Casey is focussing its advocacy efforts on a number of key projects and issues that, if successful, will make a significant difference to the quality of life of all Casey residents.

 Some of these projects are:

  1. Better roads for Casey
  2. Better buses for Casey
  3. Better trains for Casey
  4. Improved broadband infrastructure
  5. Enhancement of local employment opportunities for residents
  6. Capacity of the Melbourne Water drainage system

Information on other priority advocacy issues can be found on the City of Casey website: www.casey.vic.gov.au/advocacy

Casey's Housing Policy Review

Casey's Housing Policy Review

Council is seeking community feedback to understand people's housing choices and whether residential development in Casey is meeting the community's needs. Feedback will assist in the review of Council's Housing Diversity Statement and development of its new Rooming House Policy 2012.

Improved Broadband Infrastructure

Improved Broadband Infrastructure

Broadband availability in Casey is patchy, frustrating for householders and stifling business development.

As Victoria's largest municipality, the City of Casey needs to be considered an urgent priority for improved broadband infrastructure.

As the Federal Government and the National Broadband Company (NBN Co) roll out NBN infrastructure across Australia, the City of Casey is advocating for early inclusion in this implementation process to provide affordable and equitable broadband access for all Casey residents.

Capacity of the Melbourne Water Drainage System

Capacity of the Melbourne Water Drainage System

The lack of capacity of Melbourne Water's drainage system caused the greatest impact in the City of Casey following the February 2011 floods.

Houses were inundated for days and the major arterial roads closed until the flood waters receded in Melbourne Water’s Hallam Main Drain. The extended period of inundation following the rains not only magnified community angst, it also significantly impacted on commercial business operations and caused long-term damage to private houses.

Significantly improving the capacity of Melbourne Water’s drainage system is therefore a key priority of the City of Casey.

Enhancement of Local Employment Opportunities for Residents

Enhancement of Local Employment Opportunities for Residents

On 2 December 2008, the Victorian Government detailed how land brought within the UGB would be subject to a contribution to provide state infrastructure needed to support the development of new suburbs. The Growth Area Infrastructure Contribution (GAIC) became effective on 1 July 2010 and applies to land brought into the Urban Growth Boundary (UGB) in 2005-06 and 2010.

The City of Casey is advocating for the removal of the GAIC from employment land within the UGB. Its removal from employment land would provide greater incentive for developers to invest, thereby creating more job opportunities for Casey residents.
